Gonder located in Northwestern Ethiopia. It positions at an altitude of 2,300 meters. The city was once the Capital city of Ethiopia, from 1632-1855 E.C. It has the remains of Castles and palaces constructed by different Emperors. The ruins of the building stand inside a walled imperial compound.  There are half a dozen major building complexes and other additional buildings, enclosed by a wall 900 meters long, with twelve entrances and three bridges.

Outside the confines of the city to the north-west by the Qaha River, there is a two-storey building of bathing Emperor Fasildes. The bath (swimming pool) is only filled once a year and plays a huge part in the spiritual lives of Ethiopian Orthodox Christians in the celebration of Epiphany on 19th January every year.

Another prime attraction in Gonder is the Debre Birhan Selassie church which was built in the 17 century. The outside of Debre Birhan Selassie is rather simple, but its interior has made it one of Ethiopia’s highest visitor attractions. The ceiling is shielded with the faces of hundreds of angels. Likenesses of the Holy Trinity and the Crucifixion have pride of place above the entrance to the Holy of Holies.
